Former New London cop joins Norwich PD

Norwich – An officer who spent two years as a New London police officer was sworn in to the Norwich Police Department last week.

Officer Richard Cannata will spend 6 weeks in field training, Police Chief Louis J. Fusaro Sr. announced today. Once his training is complete, Cannata will be assigned to the patrol division. Cannata was sworn in Sept. 10.

Cannata is one of five officers to leave the New London police department for Norwich in the last few years. He is the latest in a string of officers to leave the New London police department this year. Since January, at least 10 officers have left New London for a different department, retired, resigned or were fired.

Fusaro said Cannata graduated from East Hampton High School in 2005 before studying criminal justice and law enforcement administration at the University of New Haven, where he graduated in 2009.

Cannata began with the New London Police department in 2010 after graduating from the 328th training session of the Connecticut State Police Academy. He lives in Niantic.
