UPDATED: Man charged after lengthy chase through Preston and Norwich

Norwich — The man who led city and state police on a lengthy chase through Preston and Norwich was arrested on several charges related to the chase late Saturday afternoon, according to Norwich police.

James Stolarneck, 27, of 88 Roath St., Norwich, was charged by Norwich police with reckless driving, disobeying an officer, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, engaging an officer in pursuit and interfering with a police officer. State police charged Stolarneck with reckless driving, engaging an officer in pursuit and driving the wrong way on a divided highway. He is being held on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in Norwich Superior Court today.

State police in Montville said they initially received reports of a silver sedan being driven erratically about 4 p.m. in Preston. They tried to stop the vehicle on Route 165 but broke off the pursuit as the car crossed into Norwich at East Main Street.

Norwich police pursued the car along several city streets, ending on Broad Street with police cars blocking his way. Stolarneck allegedly at one point entered the Route 2 expressway near the William W. Backus Hospital traveling westbound in the eastbound lane.

When the car was stopped, police said Stolarneck refused to get out of the car. Two officers received minor cuts when they broke a window in the car, Norwich Police Capt. Patrick Daley said. Police used a Taser stun gun to subdue Stolarneck. He was treated at Backus and released to police custody.
