Police say intoxicated Groton man crashed stolen vehicle

Groton - The driver of a vehicle that crashed into a utility pole Wednesday was driving a stolen vehicle while intoxicated, city police announced in a press release Friday.

Scott Secchiaroli, of 390 Long Hill Road in Groton, faces charges of third-degree larceny of a motor vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, driving without a license and failure to drive right.

Police said Secchiaroli was driving the vehicle that crashed into a utility pole shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Thames and Allen streets. Police arrived to find the driver of the heavily damaged vehicle had fled the scene.

Investigation led to the discovery of an intoxicated Secchiaroli walking on Baker Avenue, where he was detained, police said. Police said a K-9 track led from the vehicle to Secchiroli's location. The vehicle involved in the crash was reported stolen hours earlier in New London.

Held on $30,000 bond, Secchiaroli was due for arraignment Thursday in New London Superior Court. Further information on his court appearance was not available.
