    UPDATED: Fire in Ledyard injures one, kills family pets

    Ledyard — A person was injured and two family pets died in an early morning fire at 15 Country Club Drive.

    The fire was reported around 2:30 a.m. Police at the scene confirmed that there was a fire in the basement of the split-level ranch.

    Fire Chief John R. Doucette said firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the residence. He said the home sustained significant fire damage to the basement and first floor.

    All three occupants had safely evacuated the residence. Police said the victim was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. A cat and dog were found dead inside the home.

    A firefighter was also taken to the hospital with cuts to his hands.

    Doucette said the fire was under control in less than an hour.

    In addition to Ledyard, the Submarine FAST team, Old Mystic and Mashantucket Pequot fire departments also responded to the scene.

    The Laurel Hill Fire Company covered Ledyard fire headquarters.

    The American Red Cross assisted the family with emergency food and clothing needs.

    The cause of the fire is under investigation.
