Second woman charged in January beating outside restaurant

New London – Police on Wednesday arrested a woman for her alleged role in the Jan. 18 beating of a woman both in and outside of the China House restaurant on Ocean Avenue.

Briana Drayton, 18, of 59 Buchanan Road was scheduled to appear in court Thursday on charges of accessory to second-degree robbery, accessory to fifth-degree larceny, third-degree assault and first-degree inciting a riot.

Drayton is the second woman arrested in connection with the assault. Divona Johnson, 19, whose last known address is 42 Jefferson Ave., was charged Sunday with second-degree robbery, fifth-degree larceny, third-degree assault, first-degree inciting a riot and intimidation of a witness.

After the Jan. 18 alleged assault, the victim told police that her former friend, whom she identified as Johnson, had attacked her and stolen her phone and purse. The victim initially was  uncooperative, saying she did not want anyone arrested and just wanted her possessions back, the warrant said.

Police said that based on her responses, they believed she feared retaliation from her attackers.

On Jan. 21, the victim gave a statement to police saying that Drayton and Johnson attacked her and that Johnson stole her phone and wallet.

Drayton is held in lieu of a $50,000 bond. Johnson is next scheduled to appear Feb. 21 in court.
