Police arrest Bozrah man after standoff ends

State police tactical officers respond to a standoff a 98 Fitchville Road in Bozrah Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013.

Bozrah — The man involved in a five-hour standoff with state police that ended peacefully early Thursday morning was taken to the hospital for evaluation, then arrested on several charges.

William Coleman, 52, of 98 Fitchville Road was charged with carrying a firearm while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, interfering with an officer, disorderly conduct and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Coleman was taken to The William W. Backus Hospital because police believed he posed a threat of harm to himself and others.

Police responded to Coleman’s home at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday for a report on an intoxicated man who had fired a gun inside the home. The state police tactical unit responded to the home and evacuated residents from surrounding homes. Fitchville Road was blocked off near Exit 24 off Route 2.

Coleman was taken into custody around 1:42 a.m. No injuries were reported.

After he was taken into custody, detectives from the Eastern District Major Crime Squad executed a search-and-seizure warrant at his home and recovered a firearm and other items of evidence.

Coleman was held in lieu of a $350,000 bond and is scheduled to appear today in Norwich Superior Court.
