DEEP says suspicious package in Montville not hazardous

Montville – A report of a suspicious package at a Montville home Friday prompted action by the state police bomb squad and a state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection emergency response unit.

A resident at a home on Route 163 had opened a letter and called police when she noticed a chemical odor and experienced eye irritation, DEEP spokesman Dennis Schain said.

The woman placed the envelope into a plastic bag and left it outside her home. A portion of Route 163 was closed off temporarily during the investigation.

The DEEP tested the envelope in a mobile lab and conducted air tests inside the home, Schain said. The tests revealed nothing out of the ordinary, he said.

State police provided no further information.
