New London police warn of rash of car burglaries

New London – City police say they have stepped up patrols in the city's south end because of a recent increase in reports of car burglaries.

The thefts have come from unlocked vehicles. In some cases, thieves have broken windows to get at valuables left inside the cars, according to a statement from Capt. Steven Crowley, the department's investigation division commander.

In addition to the increased patrols, police ask residents to call if they see suspicious activity in residential areas. Police say residents can help prevent thefts by locking their vehicles at all times and removing any valuable items at night.
