A 28-year-old East Lyme man who was walking on Interstate 95 North near Exit 22 in Providence was killed late Friday night by a Rhode Island driver in an SUV.

At approximately 11:38 p.m. Friday, Anthony Pashalis was walking in the slow lane, or far right lane, of I-95, said state Sgt. Michael Reynolds of Lincoln Woods Barracks in Rhode Island. He was struck by the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

Reynolds said he would not release the name of the woman driving the SUV. She stopped at the scene, and there are no charges pending against the woman, he said.

“I don’t know, we don’t know, why he was walking on the highway,” Reynolds said. “The road is curved in that area.”

Reynolds said Pashalis went into Providence with two other people in a car, and somehow they later became separated.

The two others drove home. Reynolds said he’s not sure why Pashalis was walking where he was, but he may have been trying to cross the highway or was unfamiliar with the area.

“It was a terrible accident,” he said.

Reynolds said police were speaking to the two others to try to piece together what happened.

The body is now in the custody of the state medical examiner, he said.

Pashalis is the son of Colleen Proctor, an employee of The Day.
