Car crashes after near-miss with motorcycle

New London — One person was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not deeemed life-threatening Tuesday evening after swerving to avoid a motorcyclist and hitting and snapping a utility pole on Jefferson Avenue, police said.

The incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m., when an unidentified driver swerved to avoid a collision with a motorcycle that police say was operating in a reckless manner and without lights on.

Police said the incident remains under investigation.

Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard said the department is aware of ongoing issues with dirt bike-style motorcycles and is addressing the issue by using addition resources on shifts when most of the incidents occur.

Reichard urges anyone with any information about where the motorcycles are being stored to call the department at (860) 447-5269. Anonymous tips can be made by clicking on “Submit a Tip” on the department’s Facebook page, or texting “NLPDTip” and the tip to Tip411 (847411).
