Mystic woman charged with DUI after striking Old Mystic mill

Mystic – A 60-year-old Mystic woman was charged with driving under the influence Tuesday night after she crashed her vehicle into the Old Mystic mill building off Route 27, police said.

Police and firefighters from Old Mystic were called to the scene at 8:50 p.m. where they found a vehicle driven by Monica Chapman had struck the converted mill. Chapman was northbound on Route 27 when her vehicle swerved off the road, police said.

Chapman was not injured but police said her vehicle was heavily damaged. The building sustained moderate damage and a Stonington building official was called out to inspect the damage, according to Lt. Bryan Schneider. A building official was not available to comment Wednesday afternoon.

Chapman was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to drive right.
