Firefighters extinguish fire at multi-family house in Norwich

Firefighters battled a blaze at 267 Boswell Ave. in Norwich Saturday afternoon.

Norwich — A fire at a multifamily home on Boswell Avenue Saturday afternoon led to the evacuation of the building but no injuries, police said.

The blaze, which originated outside the two-family home at 267 Boswell Ave., was reported at 2:36 p.m. and was quickly extinguished, police said.

"We're not looking at it as suspicious in nature," said investigating officer Sgt. Peter Camp.

Camp said at least a half-dozen people had to be evacuated from the building, including a mother and an infant. After the fire was extinguished, residents were allowed to gather belongings but could not remain.

Paul Shipman, a spokesman for the American Red Cross, said the agency found temporary housing for three adults and a baby in one apartment. Two adults in the other apartment did not require housing help, he said.

The Norwich Fire Department as well as the Mohegan Tribal FAST Team responded to the blaze.

The city fire marshal responded to the fire and will be conducting an investigation, Camp said.
