Groton police say man climbed balcony to burglarize apartment

Groton - A suspect in a series of break-ins at an apartment complex off of Drozdyk Drive was arrested early Saturday after police said a resident caught him on her apartment balcony.

Police charged 29-year-old Mitchel B. Werthman of Groton after fielding a 911 call at 3:12 a.m. from a resident who reported a man with a flashlight was on her third-floor balcony trying to break in.

Werthman, of 360 Thames St., was caught hiding on one of the balconies, police said. He was charged with breach of peace, criminal attempt to commit second-degree burglary, home invasion, third-degree criminal mischief and possession of burglar tools.

Police said further investigation identified two other victims of burglaries in the same apartment complex. Charges are forthcoming, police said.

Werthman was held in lieu of a $150,000 bond pending a court appearance Feb. 5 in New London Superior Court.
