Fire destroys garage in Gales Ferry

A two-car, detached garage at 3 Sleepy Hollow Pentway was destroyed early Thursday morning in a fire.

Ledyard — A two-car, detached garage at 3 Sleepy Hollow Pentway was destroyed early this morning in a fire.

Gales Ferry Fire Chief Anthony Saccone  said the fire was reported at 7:30 a.m., but when they arrived at the scene the garage was completely engulfed in flames.

He said the 20-feet-by-30-feet structure, which was also used as a workshop, had a large attic built on top. The roof and debris from the attic had collapsed into the garage, making it difficult for the firefighters to fight the blaze or even attempt to save it.

Saccone said the fire was under control in about 30 minutes. He said the snowy weather conditions did not hamper them as the roadway had been cleared of snow. He said the town’s public works crew were called back to the scene to salt the road and prevent water used to fight the blaze from freezing and causing hazardous road conditions.

Saccone said the homeowner sustained a minor burn injury to his hand, but declined medical treatment.

A car parked outside the garage was also damaged in the blaze.

In addition to Gales Ferry, the Submarine Base Fire Department and American Ambulance also responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
