Waterford — Police arrested a 33-year-old man wanted for violation of parole Sunday morning following a brief car chase.

Eric Smith-Walker, whose last known address was 22 W. High St., New London, was charged with engaging an officer in pursuit, reckless driving, interfering with an officer, taking a motor vehicle without permission of the owner and driving with a suspended license.

Connecticut Board of Pardons and Paroles is closed on Sundays and so could not provide information about the original charges for which Smith-Walker was on parole or how he had violated parole.

Waterford Police Sgt. Jonathan Pettigrew said Smith-Walker’s ex-girlfriend called Waterford police shortly after 7 a.m. to notify them of Smith-Walker’s whereabouts. Smith-Walker had reportedly taken a car belonging to her mother without permission from Oakdell Motel in Waterford.

Waterford police found Smith-Walker at a Dunkin’ Donuts on Route 85, near the motel. When they tried to approach him, he took off in the car belonging to his ex-girlfriend’s mother and began driving on Route 85 toward New London, at times in excess of 80 mph, according to Pettigrew.

Police pursued Smith-Walker for less than 10 minutes along a four-mile stretch including various side streets, before taking him into custody at 7:27 a.m, according to Pettigrew. Smith-Walker stopped driving when he reached Jefferson Avenue in New London and then fled on foot to Elm Street, said Pettigrew. It was there that officers arrested him.

Smith-Walker is being held in lieu of a $25,000 bond at Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Montville. He is due in court today.
