Ledyard man charged in sex assaults faces new charge

Ledyard – A Ledyard man accused of sexually assaulting three young children faces new charges that allege he tried to contact one of his alleged victims.

James Matthewson, 29, of 41G Flintlock Road in Ledyard, remains held in prison in lieu of bond following his Feb. 28 arrest by Ledyard police. He was charged at that time with four counts of first-degree sexual assault and five counts of risk of injury to a minor. Police say the sexual assaults involve children between the ages of 6 and 9 and occurred between June 2013 and February of 2014 while the children were in his care.

Police served Matthewson with an additional warrant Wednesday charging him with two counts of violating terms of a protective order. Police say Matthewson tried to contact one of the victims through a letter from prison.

Matthewson remains held in lieu of a $99,000 cash bond.
