Police investigate whether Ledyard robbery is connected to string of robberies

State and local police are looking for a man who they say robbed the Henny Penny on Route 12 Monday night in Ledyard. (Provided by State Police)

Ledyard — State police said Tuesday that they are investigating whether the person behind Monday's robbery of the Henny Penny on Route 12 is connected to a string of similar robberies that have occurred in the last month.

Sgt. Shane Hassett, state police spokesman, said police are always looking for connections and that it is possible that the Ledyard robbery is related to the other three robberies or attempted robberies that occurred in the last week. Another robbery was reported on March 22 in Montville.

Hassett could not provide further information as the case remains under investigation.

Police said the robbery at the Henny Penny was reported at 8:30 p.m. Monday. The robber is described as a white male, about 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, dark gloves with yellow trim, green knit hat, work boots and a scarf.

Police said the suspect fled on foot toward Route 12. Police did not say whether he was able to steal money from the store. A K-9 unit searched for the man but was unsuccessful in finding him.

Police from several surrounding towns already were discussing similarities between the suspects in a spree of robberies that includes stores in Montville, Groton, New London and Stonington.

State police detectives also are investigating the March 22 robbery at the Chucky's Mobil on Route 32 in Montville. The suspect in that incident displayed a handgun and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and what appeared to be white gloves.

On Thursday, a white man wearing a hood, sunglasses and yellow gloves entered the Henny Penny on Route 12 in Groton and made off with cash after displaying a handgun to the store clerk.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Saturday, a white, unshaven male with yellow gloves, a dark hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses attempted an armed robbery at the Sunoco gas station at 715 Colman St., New London. The man did not obtain any cash, according to police.

About an hour after the attempted robbery in New London, Stonington police said a white male wearing a black sweatshirt robbed the Henny Penny at 2 Roosevelt Ave., Mystic.

Waterford police are investigating a robbery Monday afternoon at the Charter Oak Federal Credit Union on Boston Post Road. Police have released few details about the description of the suspect in that case.
