New London — Detectives on Tuesday arrested a 39-year-old New London woman who allegedly left her 20-month-old son unattended in a tub of hot water that resulted in severe burns.

Elizabeth Mendez-Marchany of 39 Bristol St. was charged by warrant with third-degree assault, risk of injury to a minor and providing a false statement.

Police said they responded along with firefighters to Mendez-Marchany’s home on Sept. 20 for reports of a 20-month-old with difficulty breathing.

Once they found the child had suffered burns, police began a lengthy criminal investigation and conducted numerous interviews.

Police said Mendez-Marchany, after giving initial statements inconsistent with the child’s injuries, admitted she had placed her son in the tub unattended with the water running.

The prolonged exposure to the hot water caused the injuries, police allege.

Held in lieu of a $150,000 bond, Mendez-Marchany is due to appear Wednesday in New London Superior Court.
