Nurse wants trial in Mohegan Sun casino theft case

A nurse accused of stealing a $25,000 gaming chip and other items from a California business owner at Mohegan Sun in February 2015 is headed to trial after rejecting a plea offer Monday in New London Superior Court.

Moira Canty, 42, of Rockville Center, N.Y., is charged with first-degree larceny. She is free on a $25,000 bond and is represented by the Bridgeport law firm of Frank J. Riccio.

Prosecutor Stephen M. Carney offered Canty two options to resolve her case, both of which she rejected in favor of a jury trial. One offer involved pleading guilty to a felony larceny charge and paying a $5,000 fine. The other offer entailed pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge and serving a period of incarceration.

Canty, a registered nurse, was arrested by Mohegan Tribal Police when she attempted to cash out a $25,000 chip that she had allegedly stolen from Poway, Calif., business owner Joseph Horiuchi during a party at the casino’s hotel. She also is accused of stealing $10,000 in cash, a Rolex watch and an Apple TV unit from Horiuchi, according to the state.

The stolen gaming chip has since been returned to the casino, according to the court record. Canty’s case has been added to the trial list.
