Groton man charged in December burglary at restaurant

Groton — A 60-year-old Groton man was charged Wednesday in connection with a burglary at the Bamboo House on Eastern Point Road last month.

William W. Jayne of 153 Crystal Lake Road was charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and second-degree criminal mischief.

On Dec. 16, Groton City Police responded to a call about a possible burglary at the Bamboo House and found the front door to the business, which is made entirely of glass, smashed and a large rock in the entryway.

The front counter was in disarray and the cash drawer portion of the computer cash register was missing, according to an application for an arrest warrant.

The restaurant owner told police he had closed and locked the restaurant at 10 p.m. on Dec. 15, and there was about $300 in the cash register.

Video surveillance at the restaurant showed an older man enter the front door, hoist himself onto the counter and grab the cash register drawer.

The video later was distributed to police agencies, on social media and to news media agencies.

Police received a call on Dec. 21 from someone identifying the person as Jayne, according to court documents.
