New London — A man who police initially said suffered life-threatening injuries when his bicycle collided with a police cruiser on Hempstead Street near the intersection with Thompson Court Sunday afternoon, was listed in stable condition at Yale New Haven Hospital on Monday afternoon.
Police said Christopher Q. Petteway, 41, of 25 Brainard St., New London, was initially taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. He was later flown by LifeStar helicopter to Yale New Haven Hospital.
The police officer involved in the collision, Jeffrey Nichols, was not injured. Nichols was responding to a domestic disturbance when the collision took place about 3:52 p.m.

Onlookers said Petteway was thrown over the windshield of the car.
Minutes later, a bike lay on the pavement on Hempstead Street while New London officers inspected the cruiser's partially shattered windshield.
Several people who live nearby said they heard sirens and then a loud crash.
At the request of New London police and the New London State's Attorney Office, the state police have taken over the investigation of the crash.
