New London — Police arrested two men Wednesday night after one of them allegedly fired a gun off the stern of a ferry returning from Block Island.

Michael Richard, 53, of Blythewood, S.C., was charged with carrying a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, carrying a firearm without a permit, unlawful discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment and breach of peace.

Michael McMahon, 55, of Hamden was charged with breach of peace and carrying a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Police said Cross Sound Ferry personnel reported at 9:14 p.m. that two men, one of whom had a handgun, were involved in shooting a gun off the stern of the ferry.

Officers boarded the ferry when it arrived in the city and multiple witnesses, including off-duty police officers from other towns, pointed out the men who allegedly were involved.

Police said they seized a Glock 43 9mm handgun during their investigation. Police aren’t aware of any injuries or property damage stemming from the incident.

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted police.

Richard and McMahon, both released on $10,000 bonds, are due Sept. 6 in New London Superior Court.
