Blaze that destroyed New London Taco Bell ruled accidental
New London — The roaring blaze that tore through Taco Bell last month, leaving its roof in danger of collapsing, has been ruled accidental.
According to city Fire Marshal Vernon Skau, the blaze was electrical in nature and began near the 404 Colman St. restaurant’s takeout window.
First responders learned of the fire around 5 a.m. Nov. 11, when a burglar alarm went off at the restaurant. The alarm fueled speculation that the blaze may have been intentionally set, but Skau said it’s not unusual in electrical fires for such alarms to be triggered.
Skau said the company plans to demolish the heavily-damaged building and construct a new Taco Bell in its place.
Inspectors haven’t yet nailed down the chain of events that led to the electrical failure. The fire remains under investigation.
