Police stepping up DUI, highway patrols throughout holiday weekend

Middletown — State police are beefing up patrols throughout the New Year's weekend to try and reduce the number of drunken drivers and crashes on Connecticut's roads.

The stepped up enforcement began at 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 29, and will end at 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 1.

Already, troopers have issued more than 260 speeding violations and made at least 12 DUI arrests. Police responded to 2,418 calls for service between the time the holiday enforcement began and 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said they will continue to update these statistics throughout the weekend.
