Two dead, one seriously injured after boat overturns in Mumford Cove
Groton — Two waterfowl hunters have died and a third remains in serious condition at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital after their boat overturned in Mumford Cove on Saturday morning.
The Groton Long Point Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard recovered three males after receiving reports of a capsized vessel about 9:13 a.m., according to Lee Sawyer of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
DEEP said the hunters' names would not yet be released.
The incident, described as a boating accident by DEEP, remains under investigation by Environmental Conservation Police.
Emergency crews responded to the area shortly after 9:20 a.m. after a resident reported seeing a vessel swamped with no occupants, according to DEEP.
Groton Long Point firefighters recovered two men from the water, and one man was found on the shore of Bluff Point State Park by the Coast Guard.
DEEP said the men launched out of the Bayberry Lane State Access Area in Groton. A 16-foot motorboat with outboard engine was recovered.
Earlier Saturday afternoon, Sawyer said two of the hunters were in critical condition and a third was in serious condition.
Chief Robert Stravinsky of the Coast Guard said the station boat took one of the males and met emergency medical crews at the New London station for transport to L+M. The other males were transported separately, he said.
Conservation police, Groton Town Police and the Groton Fire Department assisted in recovering the hunters, DEEP said.
Environmental Conservation Police's Boating Accident Reconstruction Unit has been called in to assist.
