Old Lyme — A Hamden man, charged with stealing $3,164.44 from a Subway sandwich shop while employed there from November through February, is due Thursday in New London Superior Court.

In a warrant, police said 35-year-old Roger John Furtak, who was a closer at the 68 Hall Road shop, took money from the register through “deceptive measures” 376 times.

Sometimes, police said, Furtak would charge the customer the correct amount for an item, then void the sale and re-enter an item of lesser cost, pocketing the difference.

Other times, police said, Furtak would make it appear the food had been thrown away and would pocket the whole cost.

Deborah Hans, the owner of the store, conducted her own investigation into Furtak before firing him Feb. 20, at which point police said he apologized to Hans but refused to speak to police.

Police said Hans turned over 373 receipts and 91 video clips from high-definition cameras documenting the transactions.

Furtak, charged on the warrant Sept. 28, is free on a $2,500 bond.
