Mohegan — Police have charged a former Mohegan Sun blackjack dealer with conspiring with two players to steal $61,175 from the casino last fall.

David C. Peters, 49, of 24 Avery Court, New London, was charged Feb. 22 on a warrant with conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, first-degree larceny and cheating.

Police said they began investigating when a “refused name” player — or a player who doesn’t use a player’s club card and thus is unidentified — won $33,700 at a blackjack table Oct. 12.

Police said a tribal Surveillance Department review showed Peters had cheated to help Jesus M. Quesada Jr., the “refused name” player, and another player, who hasn’t yet been identified.

The finding triggered a review of the preceding two weeks of Peters’ work, which police said uncovered more cheating. Sometimes Peters would allow the players to increase their wagers after the time to do so had passed, police said. Other times he allegedly paid the players when they had tied or lost, or diverted cards he knew would break their hands.

Police said the review of Peters’ work found cheating on Sept. 24, Oct. 1, Oct. 8, Oct. 12 and Oct. 15. While police named Quesada in each of the incidents, they only implicated the second, unidentified player in the Oct. 12 incident.

Police said members of the Surveillance Department followed Peters on Oct. 19 and saw Quesada hand him eight $100 bills in the Riverview Garage after the two had spoken by phone. Police said the two then went to the blackjack table, where Peters cheated in favor of Quesada, who won $3,000.

Police approached both at the table and charged them with third-degree larceny.

Quesada, 28, was free on a $1,000 bond and due Thursday in Norwich Superior Court. It isn’t clear if his charges will be upgraded.

Peters, free on a combined $40,000 bond, was due in court Wednesday on the third-degree larceny charge and Thursday on the latest charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
