Middle school student drops spent shell casing at Ledyard school, police called

Ledyard — Town police on Tuesday were called to Ledyard Middle School following the discovery of spent shell casings, one of which had fallen from a student’s backpack.

Police said there was no indication of malicious intent and no students or school personnel were in any danger.

The incident occurred about 1 p.m. with a call to police from school staff, who had identified the student carrying the backpack. As it turns out, police said the student had four casings in his backpack for a month or more, having found them while riding bikes and go-carts in a local sandpit.

Police said the student’s parent also was called to the school.

In a notice to the middle school community, Principal Ryan Earley said the dropped spent shell casing, once found, was immediately reported and turned in to a teacher.

“Regarding this situation, there is no concern for safety and as always LMS administration, teachers, and staff treat and address student safety with paramount importance,” Earley said in his notice. “This type of situation reinforced the effectiveness of the ‘see something, say something’ process and the students and teachers addressed this effectively.”
