Groton Town Police interrupt robbery; suspects escape

Groton — Town Police said they interrupted an attempted robbery at a Walgreens Wednesday morning.

According to a department news release, two males wearing hooded sweatshirts and facial coverings tried stealing prescription narcotics at a Walgreens at 441 Long Hill Road at about 10:30 Wednesday morning.

“The males proceeded directly to the pharmacy counter where they entered the pharmacy section by jumping the counter and immediately began selecting specific prescription narcotics and taking them,” the release reads.

As the two men were engaging in their scheme, a Groton Town Police officer “was conducting a walk-through of the business,” according to the release. The officer was in a different part of the store when they learned of the crime in progress. They then approached the two men and told them to stop, but the men ran away, and the officer chased after them on foot.

The two men escaped, getting into a Toyota Camry traveling southbound on Long Hill Road. The car was a dark color and had a North Carolina license plate reading JHE1351. Police found that the plate did not match the car fleeing the scene. The two men got away “with an unknown quantity of narcotics.”

Police said they are actively investigating the incident and ask witnesses or people with information to call the department at 860-441-6712.
