Norwich firefighters extinguish brush fire late Friday

Norwich ― Firefighters extinguished a 3-acre brush fire late Friday night in the area of 57 Woodside Ave.

Norwich Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael A. Dziavit said in a news release that the fire department was dispatched to the fire at 11:43 p.m. Friday and found that about 3 acres of difficult, hilly terrain were burning.

Firefighters battled the fire for an hour to fully contain it and then worked for another hour to put out hot spots, he said.

“Crews worked extensively to gain control and stop the fire spread,” Dziavit said. The last crews left the scene at 2:08 a.m. Saturday.

No injuries were reported and no buildings at risk, he said. The cause of the fire is unknown.

In addition to the Norwich Fire Department, Laurel Hill Volunteer Fire Department UTV 6, a small off road utility vehicle, responded, according to the release.

“While all Norwich Fire Department resources were working the fire, East Great Plain Volunteer Fire Department, Taftville Volunteer Fire Department, and Laurel Hill Fire Department provided station coverage” and also handled a rollover accident that happened during the same time, according to the release.
