Norwich police plan distracted driving enforcement campaign

The Norwich Police Department, in conjunction with the state Department of Transportation, will begin its bi-annual High Visibility Distracted Driving Enforcement campaign on Saturday.

Officers will be enforcing and educating the public about the dangers and consequences of distracted driving. The enforcement period will continue for 15 days until Nov. 1.

Distracted driving includes activities such as talking or texting on a cell phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — “anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving,” Norwich police said in a statement.

Connecticut law prohibits the use of any hand-held mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle. Drivers who are 16 or 17 years of age are prohibited from using a cell phone or mobile device at any time – even with a hands-free accessory.
