Chimney fire strikes seasonal house in Niantic

East Lyme ―The American Red Cross on Monday evening put up two seasonal residents in a hotel after a chimney fire at their home.

Niantic Fire Department Chief John MacDonald said his department was dispatched to 16 Orchard St. around 5:45 p.m. for reports of smoke in the building. Firefighters found a small fire next to the chimney outside the house.

There were no injuries, according to MacDonald. He said the part-time residents were visiting for the weekend when the smoke filled the house.

Firefighters were at the scene for about two hours, MacDonald said. The fire was contained to the exterior area where they found it.

“It was just a lot of cutting to get to it,” he said. “We finally got to it, opened it up and extinguished the fire.”

The Red Cross in a press release said they assisted two adults. MacDonald said they were given overnight hotel accommodations.

Also responding were Flanders Fire Department, the Old Saybrook Rapid Intervention Team, L+M Hospital paramedics and Old Lyme Volunteer Ambulance Association. Departments from Waterford and Old Lyme provided station coverage while local firefighters were at the scene.
