Waterford ― Police said they arrested four suspects in a bank fraud case on Wednesday after they crashed their getaway vehicle while trying to elude police.

The incident began at 12:50 p.m. when Waterford police responded to the Citizen’s Bank branch on Boston Post Road for a report of fraudulent activity.

Police said they located the suspects’ vehicle and attempted to pull it over on Clark Lane. Instead of stopping, police said the vehicle sped off at a high rate of speed and was found to have crashed into a tree on Fog Plain Road.

Police arrived at the crash scene to find three of the four men had fled on foot. The fourth had stayed with the vehicle. Police said they established a perimeter and located all three men, taking them into custody.

Amadeus Johnson, 21, of Bronx, N.Y., the driver who crashed during the getaway attempt from police, was charged with trafficking in personal identifying information, conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny, interfering with an officer, engaging an officer in pursuit, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and driving without a license.

Jemar Spencer, 20, of Bridgeport, and Dashawn Caines, 22, of Bronx, N.Y., were each charged with trafficking in personal identifying information, conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny and interfering with an officer.

Phillip Black, 65, of Bronx, N.Y., was charged with third-degree identity theft, conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny and third-degree forgery.

All four were held in lieu of a $75,000 bond pending arraignment Thursday in New London Superior Court. Details of the alleged crime at Citizen’s Bank were not immediately available.
