    Four Stonington stores cited for underage tobacco, e-cig sales

    Stonington ― Unannounced tobacco and electronic cigarette compliance inspections this week led to infractions for clerks at four town retailers.

    Of the 14 unannounced compliance checks, police said the following establishments were found to be non-compliant: Art of Smoke at 37 S. Broad St., Honey Plus at 163 S. Broad St., Citgo at 48 Stonington Road and Mystic Mobil at 34 E. Main St.

    Stonington police said the compliance checks were made to determine which retailers would sell tobacco products to people under the age of 21 and were conducted in cooperation with the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

    Under state law, retailers of are required to inspect the photo identification of anyone who appears under the age of 30 before selling them tobacco or e-cigarette products.
