New London ― A two-alarm fire early Monday badly damaged a home at 33 Grove St. and displaced two people.

New London Fire Chief Thomas Curcio said firefighters responded to the single-family home shortly after midnight for reports of smoke from the home.

The first firefighters at the scene encountered the home’s attached garage fully engulfed in flames with fire spreading into the home. Curcio said there were initial reports of people trapped in the home, prompting an interior search. The two residents, Curcio said, were able to get out of the home through ground-level windows and were not injured.

Heat from the fire damaged a neighboring home and a vehicle in the driveway.

New London firefighters were at the scene much of the night. Firefighters were aided at the scene by Waterford and Submarine Base fire departments and Groton Ambulance. Waterford and Poquonnock Bridge fire departments additionally provided coverage of the city during the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the New London Fire Marshal’s Office. The Red Cross provided emergency assistance, including a place to stay, for the displaced family.
