Bicyclist, 69, killed in hit-and-run in Stonington

Stonington ― Police said a 69-year-old bicyclist from Stonington was killed late Monday night when he was struck by an SUV that left the scene of the accident.

Police identified the man who was killed as Gary F. Piver of 21 Cemetery Road. Piver would have turned 70 on Tuesday.

The hit-and-run was reported to police at 10:44 p.m. and occurred in the area of 210 South Broad St. (Route 1) in Pawcatuck.

Westerly Ambulance transported Piver to Westerly Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Stonington Police Deputy Chief Todd Olson said in a statement.

Police said their investigation has determined Piver was struck by a dark gray Toyota SUV traveling west on Route 1. Piver was traveling westbound with traffic at the time, police said.

Route 1 was temporarily closed for several hours early Tuesday as the regional accident reconstruction team composed of members of the Stonington, Ledyard and Groton Town police departments investigated the incident. Stonington police detectives also are involved in the investigation.
