    NL police investigate shooting

New London ― Staff and students at four New London schools were asked to secure in place for an hour on Wednesday morning as police investigated reports of a man firing shots at a vehicle nearby.

Police said the shooting took place at 11:08 a.m. in the area of Hempstead and Franklin streets where witnesses saw a man shooting at a vehicle and running. Responding police canvassed the area and searched for the suspect with the aid of a K9 team from Waterford Police Department.

No arrests were made and no shooting victims identified but police said investigators found some evidence to support the reports of the shooting. Police did not say what that evidence was. New London Police Captain Matthew Galante, in a statement, said the shooting does not appear to be a random act.

C.B. Jennings International Elementary Magnet School on Mercer Street, the Bennie Dover Jackson Multi-Magnet Middle School on Waller Street, the Regional Multicultural Magnet School on Bulkeley Place and the Interdistrict School for Arts and Communication (ISAAC) on Governor Winthrop Boulevard all were asked by police to be placed into “secure building mode,” due to the proximity to the shooting. Schools, while in secure building mode, do not allow people in or out. The precautionary measure was lifted at 12:04 p.m.

Police additionally notified the two New London courthouses and the New London Senior Citizen Center about the incident.

Police said investigation continues into Wednesday’s shooting. The incident comes less than a week after the city’s high school campus was briefly placed in lockdown as police investigated reports of a group of juveniles shooting a gun in a parking lot less than a mile from the school.
