Mercedes driver charged with beating elderly man after Norwich fender bender

Norwich ― An Uncasville man faces assault and threatening charges after police say he knocked a man unconscious and caused facial injuries following a minor accident on Franklin Street last July.

Charles L. Roderick, 30, of 27 Tramart Dr. was charged Wednesday with second-degree assault on an elderly or disabled person, second-degree threatening and breach of peace. He was released on a $200,000 bond after his Thursday arraignment in Norwich Superior Court June 22.

Police said they responded to the incident at 340 Franklin St. on July 27, 2022 and found a 69-year-old man with blood on his face and in one eye. The man was confused and told stories police said made no sense.

Based on their investigation, including video footage in the Franklin Street area, the victim was in a red truck and backed up, striking a white Mercedes parked behind him. Police said Roderick, who was standing outside his Mercedes, approached the victim, who got out of the truck and was attempting to hand Roderick what police said looked like an insurance card.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, video footage showed Roderick punching the victim at least six times, knocking him unconscious after the second punch. The man fell to the ground not moving, police said. Roderick returned to his vehicle, made a U-turn and left the scene.

During the incident, police said Roderick dropped his cellphone inside the truck, where the victim discovered it and turned it over to police. Police used the phone to track Roderick.

The victim was taken to the Backus Hospital and treated for facial cuts, one of which required stitches above his eye. The victim told police he had blurry vision for six weeks and saw an eye specialist after the incident.
