Norwich man to head to prison for hatchet attack

Norwich ― A 33-year-old city man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges related to a 2022 hatchet attack at a Cliff Street apartment.

Kwendelle Wiggins pleaded guilty in New London Superior Court to second-degree assault, second-degree burglary and attempt to tamper with a witness. As part of a plea agreement with state prosecutors, Wiggins faces up to four years in prison at his sentencing on Oct. 11.

Wiggins was arrested by police in connection with a Feb. 8, 2022 home invasion and assault that left one person with significant injuries. Assistant State’s Attorney Stephen Carney said Wiggins, while incarcerated, had attempted to contact witnesses to the incident in an attempt to sway them to “adopt his version” of what had happened.

Wiggins additionally admitted violating his probation. He was on probation in connection with a 2017 conviction for first-degree robbery. Wiggins entered his pleas Tuesday under the Alford Doctrine, which means he does not agree with all of the allegations against him but acknowledges the state has enough evidence for a conviction.
