State Police retrieve stolen gun after stopping car in Norwich

Norwich ― State police said they retrieved a stolen gun after stopping a driver who they said was operating erratically late Thursday.

According to state police, at 11:28 p.m. Thursday, a trooper from Troop K in Colchester was patrolling Route 2 eastbound near Exit 27 when the trooper saw a green Acura “failing to maintain its lane and traveling at varying rates of speed.”

Police said the trooper stopped the driver and noticed a strong odor of marijuana and alcohol coming from the car.

The trooper found the driver, Kyna L. Smith, 39, of Bloomfield, “was exhibiting signs of possible impairment.” Police said she “appeared unsteady on her feet,” and sobriety tests “were not performed to standard.”

Police said she was taken into custody, and her passenger was asked to leave the car. Police searched the car and found a 9mm handgun, which they said belonged to the passenger, Michael A. Martin, 41, of East Hartford, but the handgun’s “serial number indicated that the handgun was stolen.”

Smith was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license and failure to maintain a proper lane. Police said she was released on a $30,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment at Norwich Superior Court on Sept. 12.

Martin was charged with illegal possession of a large-capacity magazine, stealing a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm. Police said he was released on a $30,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment at Norwich Superior Court on Sept. 14.
