Bounty hunter charged with firing bean bag rounds at wanted man in Norwich

Norwich ― A 29-year bail bondsman accused of firing bean bag shotgun rounds at an individual in Norwich earlier this month was arrested Thursday, police said.

Jonathan Muckinhaupt, of 184 Draper St., Springfield, Mass., was charged by Norwich police with first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm, second-degree breach of peace, second-degree criminal mischief and risk of injury to a minor.

Norwich police at approximately 7 p.m. Sept. 12 were called to the area of Lake Street after learning a bail enforcement officer, later identified by police as Muckinhaupt, had fired bean bag rounds into a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Jordan Lanphear, striking him.

Lanphear, who fled the scene, was wanted on multiple drug and gun-related charges stemming from an arrest by Waterbury police in 2022. Court records show Lanphear was ordered rearrested after failing to appear in court. Lanphear was free after posting a combined $290,000 bond, records show.

Muckinhaupt posted a $25,000 bond soon after his arrest and is due to be arraigned on Oct. 12 in Norwich Superior Court.
