Shaw’s Cove Bridge temporarily stuck in closed position, not allowing any marine traffic

New London ― The Shaw’s Cove Bridge, a swing bridge that carries Amtrak trains along the Northeast Corridor railroad passage, will be closed to maritime traffic until about 6 p.m. Monday.

The bridge malfunctioned Sunday between 11:30 a.m. and noon, Petty Officer Jacob Byron, of Coast Guard Station New London, said Sunday. The bridge malfunctioned while it was opening.

The malfunction had caused a backup of trains, Byron said, leading bridge operators to force the bridge back into the closed position, so that it could accommodate rail traffic. While it’s closed, maritime traffic cannot go underneath the bridge.

Due to the holiday weekend, no one was able to come out and do emergency repairs Sunday, Byron said. He said the bridge will be inspected by Amtrak officials around 6 p.m. Monday.

The bridge could be fixed Monday, or it could be stuck until Tuesday, Byron said, adding that a more definite estimate will be available Monday.
