OSHA looking into agency that employed caretaker killed in East Lyme fire

East Lyme ― The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened an “inspection” of ElderCare Services LLC, the agency that employed the caretaker who died in a Jan. 12 house fire here that also claimed the life of an elderly man.

OSHA’s inspection seeks to determine if the employer is in compliance with OSHA workplace safety and health standards, according to an OSHA spokesman. If the inspection identifies violations, OSHA could issue citations and propose penalties.

OSHA has up to six months to complete the inspection.

According to its website, ElderCare Services is based in Orange and provides services throughout the state.

The Jan. 12 fire at 13 Willow Lane resulted in the accidental deaths of caretaker Otolegile Morulane, 46, who was from the Republic of Botswana, Africa, and Merril Lozanov, 95, who lived at the address.

The town fire marshal’s office and the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Unit determined the cause of the fire was an overheated electrical cord in a first-floor dining room.
