Police: East Lyme stalking case results in arrest

East Lyme ― A Springfield man wanted on a warrant for a dozen stalking-related charges was arrested late Friday night after local police pulled him over on Chesterfield Road.

Stephen M. Nicholson, 35, was charged with first-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree kidnapping, two counts of second-degree stalking, two counts of second-degree threatening, second-degree harassment, interfering with an emergency call, coercion, third-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and harmful communication with a minor.

Local police in an arrest warrant affidavit accused Nicholson of stalking an East Lyme woman for more than a year and a half, starting when she was 17 years old.

The affidavit described a pattern of behavior by Nicholson that involved manipulating the woman, who was in the country on a student visa, to believe he would report her to immigration authorities or hurt her friends and family members if she didn’t spend time with him.

Nicholson is accused of forcing the woman to go to a New London restaurant with him and behaving increasingly erratically on the drive there. Police said statements and photos from the woman show he smashed her cell phone into her face when she tried to call 911 and then jammed her hand into the car door when she tried to unlock a canister of pepper spray. He also pushed her into the side of the car with enough force to leave bruises, according to the affidavit.

The woman detailed online and in-person stalking behavior that included unwanted communication with her family members and friends, as well as visits to her neighborhood to try to determine her exact location by getting neighbors to talk.

Nicholson is being held over the weekend on a $250,000 bond set by a New London Superior Court judge that can only be posted at court. Conditions specify he cannot have any contact with the woman.

He is set for arraignment Monday.
