Convicted Ledyard con artist facing new charges in prison

Police allege a 64-year-old convicted con artist from Ledyard found a new victim while serving a 10-year prison sentence.

Ledyard police charged Joanne Skok on Feb. 27 with fourth-degree larceny for allegedly convincing a former neighbor to write her two checks totaling $1,700 for surgery that police said was never planned.

Skok is serving time at York Correctional Institution for first-degree larceny after bilking an elderly Montville woman out of her life savings.

In December, however, Skok was at a nursing home in Rocky Hill contracted by the Department of Correction. Skok made the calls to the 73-year-old victim from the nursing home, police said, and had her husband, John Skok, pick up and deliver the money. Police said John Skok cashed a $1,500 check but was unable to cash a $200 check after the victim stopped payment.

Joanne Skok has pleaded not guilty to the charge and is due to appear April 10 in New London Superior Court.
