Truck fire tangles traffic, sends one person to the hospital

Groton — Interstate 95 south and roads surrounding it were congested for multiple hours Wednesday morning after a box truck caught fire between exits 89 and 88, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Crews closed the two right lanes for 90 minutes as they worked to put out the blaze, which began about 6:30 a.m., and remove the vehicle. Traffic on routes 184 and 1 as well as I-95 backed up into Stonington as a result of the fire.

According to the Old Mystic Fire Department, members of the Old Mystic and Poquonnock Bridge departments as well as Mystic River Ambulance responded to the scene, where a truck carrying vegetables was engulfed in flames.

Fire officials said firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. Mystic River Ambulance took one patient to the hospital for smoke inhalation, officials said.
