Wood stove embers spark brush fire in North Stonington

North Stonington — Area firefighters battled a brush fire near the Rhode Island border on Monday that the town's fire marshal said was accidentally sparked by embers from a wood stove.

Reported about 3 p.m., the fire occurred in an outside area at 318 Boombridge Road, home to Moran Sand & Gravel.

Along with some debris, the fire burned some tires, said Fire Marshal George Brennan. The North Stonington Fire Department was joined by firefighters from Westerly and other neighboring departments.

Brennan ruled the fire accidental and said wind likely spread the embers, which had been deposited in an outside area. No buildings were burned and no injuries reported.

The extent of the fire, which was under control after two hours, was not immediately clear. A representative from the North Stonington Fire Department could not be reached for comment.
