Suspicious package prompts brief lockdown at sub base
Groton — The Naval Submarine Base went into a brief lockdown Wednesday morning because of a suspicious package.
In a news release, officials said the package was found near Building 461, a former liquor store, around 9 a.m.
The base was on lockdown for everyone except essential personnel — a standard procedure — as emergency responders dealt with the package. The Submarine Force Library and Museum, adjacent to the base, additionally was closed to the public.
Officials said responders determined the package was not a threat. The lockdown was lifted about 10:30 a.m., allowing the library and museum to reopen.
The base notified local, state and federal officials of the incident.
