Train strikes, kills person in Westbrook; service resumed at restricted speeds

An Amtrak train struck and killed an unidentified person in Westbrook Friday morning, prompting Amtrak and Shore Line East to suspend service for several hours, officials said.

Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said train 2153, an Acela Express, was traveling from Boston to Washington, D.C., when it struck a person who was on the tracks illegally at around 7:45 a.m.

Abrams said no crew members or passengers were injured. State Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Nursick said the person was killed.

Amtrak and DOT did not identify the person. Amtrak said the incident remains under investigation. State police referred questions to Amtrak Police; a message left with Amtrak Friday evening was not immediately returned.

    Impacted trains included 2190, 190, 2150, 170, 95 and 2155.

By about 6:20 p.m., two Amtrak Northeast tracks were released for service at restricted speeds.

Shore Line East temporarily suspended service for several hours between Guilford and Old Saybrook. Multiple trains were canceled and substituted with Amtrak trains or buses.

"This is a critical reminder that it takes a full mile for a train to stop and about the importance of exercising caution around railroad tracks and crossings," Abrams said in an email.
