New London police call on students to name new K-9

New London — City police, equipped with a new K-9, are asking elementary school students to help them come up with its name.

Police purchased the K-9, a 10-month-old male German shepherd, from a kennel in upstate New York for about $7,000. It's the third K-9 the department has brought on in the past seven months.

In an email, Capt. Brian Wright said “community partners and stakeholders” contributed the funds for the dog.

The shepherd is partnering with Officer John Michaud, who has been with the department since January 2006 and was paired with the late K-9 Buck for about seven years. The duo will begin training soon.

Elementary school students wishing to name the dog must fill out a form and give it to their teacher, who will then submit it to the office of the school. The form can be found on the New London Police Department’s Facebook page.

The winner of the contest also will get a certificate of appreciation from Chief Peter Reichard, an opportunity to meet and take a photo with Michaud and the K-9 and a New London police K-9 T-shirt.

The contest closes at noon Tuesday.
